QBIT Capital

The Bridge between Switzerland and the U.S.

Basel Sbeini

For the past 13 consecutive years, Switzerland has been recognized as the world's most innovative country. This distinction stems from the country’s dense network of leading universities and research institutions, which attract top-tier talent globally. Additionally, Switzerland's business-friendly environment, availability of non-dilutive grants for entrepreneurs, and a culture that encourages innovation and engineering excellence make it an ideal hub for startups.

This environment led Basel Sbeini to join QBIT Capital AG (QBIT) as a Partner. QBIT is a Swiss-based venture capital firm with an office in Los Angeles, focusing on early-stage investments within Switzerland, particularly in technology startups. Basel's background in financial services, where he demonstrated leadership by building teams across the U.S. and managing the growth of banking assets to over $6.5 billion for J.P. Morgan and UBS, positioned him well. His focus was on advising entrepreneurs to grow their companies and establish exit strategies, making him well-versed in the venture business as an investor and close ally to founders.

Basel finds the Swiss market dynamic when it comes to early-stage investing. Highly technical founders from across the globe study at prestigious universities in Switzerland and choose to establish their companies there due to the abundance of resources. Sectors that Basel sees flourishing in Switzerland include biotech, MedTech, fintech, AI, cleantech, robotics, and deep tech. Given the nature of the Swiss economy, with large contributors to GDP being pharmaceuticals, high-precision machinery, and services (banking and insurance), the culture has embraced high-touch and highly technical innovative solutions. On a per capita basis, Switzerland has one of the highest Nobel Prize winners, the most patents, and invests the most in R&D.

“Early-stage startups have the luxury of testing their solutions domestically in Switzerland, allowing them to iterate and adapt to different cultures and languages”

Early-stage startups have the luxury of testing their solutions domestically in Switzerland, allowing them to iterate and adapt to different cultures and languages. Within the 26 cantons, there are four national languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Although English is not an official language, most of the population speaks and operates in English. This empowers startups to expand to nearby countries – Germany, Austria, France, UK, and Italy. Swiss founders often solve global problems, and after expanding to nearby countries, they plan to establish operations in the U.S. and Asia.

Besides spending a lot of time meeting with startups, Basel supports QBIT's portfolio companies in expanding to the US.. He is commonly asked by founders for help in establishing U.S. legal structures, hiring, sales strategies, finding the right accountants, lawyers, HR providers, and introductions to U.S. investors.

Two years into investing in Swiss startups, the biggest things that have stood out to Basel are the meticulousness in building out roadmaps and the focus on accomplishing what founders say they will accomplish. He finds that Swiss startups do not skip steps and approach business building in a calculated way. He believes that this may be why Swiss startups have the highest survival rates in the globe.
